The Power and Virtues of Ayat al-Kursi
What is Ayat al-Kursi?
Ayat al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255) is one of the most powerful verses in the Qur'an. It is often called the "Throne Verse" and describes the greatness, knowledge, and authority of Allah ﷻ over the heavens and the earth.
Narrated by Ubayy ibn Ka'b
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“O Abu Mundhir, do you know which verse from the Book of Allah is the greatest?”
I said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.”
He (ﷺ) said: “Ayat al-Kursi”
I said: “Allahu la ilaha illa huwa...”
The Prophet ﷺ struck me on my chest and said:
“Congratulations on your knowledge, O Abu Mundhir!”
Sahih Muslim, Hadith 810
Meaning (Brief Summary):
Ayatul Kursi tells us that:
Allah is the only true God, eternal and ever-living.
He never gets tired or sleeps.
Everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Him.
No one can intercede (speak on behalf of someone else) unless He allows it.
His knowledge covers everything—past, present, and future.
His Kursi (Throne or Authority) extends over the entire universe.
Guarding the heavens and the earth does not tire Him.
He is Most High and Most Great.
English Translation:
Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

🌅 Morning and evening azkar
🌃 Before going to sleep
Narrated by Abu Hurairah
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made me responsible to guard the Zakat of Ramadan. Then someone came and started stealing food. I caught him and said, "I will take you to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ!" He said, "I am needy, and I have children, and I am in great need." So I let him go.
In the morning, the Prophet ﷺ said, "O Abu Hurairah! What did your prisoner do last night?" I said, "He complained of great need and a family, so I had mercy on him and let him go."
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, he told you a lie, and he will return."
This happened three times. On the third time, the man said to Abu Hurairah:
"When you go to your bed, recite Ayatul Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255), for there will remain over you a guardian from Allah, and no devil will approach you until morning."
The Prophet ﷺ then said, "He told you the truth, though he is a liar. Do you know who you were speaking to these past nights?" I said, "No." He said, "That was Shaytaan (Satan)."
Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 2311
Reciting Ayatul Kursi before sleeping protects you from shaitan throughout the night.
